Adare Manor, Ireland

Choose from two very different vibes for your ceremony and party theme at Adare Manor in Limerick in Ireland. On the one hand there’s The Walled Garden, which creates a kind of secret-hideaway ambience for summer celebrations; at the other end of the style scale is the Grand Ballroom. With floor-to-ceiling windows and crystal chandeliers, it can hold more than 300 guests for a seriously posh dinner. adaremanor.com

Brewhouse & Kitchen, Nottingham

Two of Brewhouse & Kitchen’s venues offer a stylish backdrop for weddings. Riverside Gallery in Nottingham, is located over a brew-pub set on the River Trent and can cater for 100 seated, 170 standing. The Campbell Room in Milton Keynes has a domed ceiling, large terrace area and private balcony, and can host up to 200. At both there’s the chance to brew your own beer to serve guests. brewhouseandkitchen.com

Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa

Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa, Warwickshire

With one of the country’s most stunning topiary gardens inspired by Alice in Wonderland, Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa isn’t short of great backdrops. (Three miles from Stratford upon Avon, rumour has it Shakespeare was married here, too.) You can exchange vows outside if you fancy alfresco (up to 100) or host 125 guests inside the 16th-century manor. billesleymanor.com

Crumplebury Herefordshire

Crumplebury, Herefordshire

There’s no shortage of spots for ceremonies outdoors at Crumplebury, in Herefordshire. Or you can say ‘I do’ in the Art Gallery with 150 for a ceremony, then bring the outdoors inside with a party in the Grand Hall with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Food miles are low – meat comes from the home farm; game is sourced in the woodlands – and you can enjoy a barbecue in a field or canapés in the woods. crumplebury.co.uk

Slaley Hall Northumberland

Slaley Hall, Northumberland

A gem in the Northumberland countryside, Slaley Hall is a short drive from Newcastle with four beautiful rooms for weddings catering for groups of 60-300. If you’re looking for a smallish (50 guests) wedding on a budget, the late-availability package could save you serious money (if you book within 12 months of your date). slaleyhallhotel.com

Oakwood School Chichester

Oakwood School, West Sussex

There won’t be any talking at the back during your ceremony – guests will be speechless, as they take in the Heritage Room at Oakwood School in Chichester, West Sussex. The Regency mansion, a prep school, is available for selected weekends and in school holidays with small receptions and ceremonies (in the same room) or up to 200 in a marquee. oakwoodschool.co.uk

Penshurst Place Kent

Penshurst Place, Kent

Kent is called the Garden of England and, if Penshurst Place is anything to go by, it’s well deserved. The Renaissance-inspired Italian Garden is one of the settings for humanist weddings, but don’t ignore the interiors for civil ceremonies. The Baron’s Hall seats 200 and is straight out of a movie set, while The Buttery is perfect for 50 standing. penshurstplace.com

Lainston House Hampshire

Lainston House, Hampshire

At Lainston House near Winchester, a corridor from the main hotel leads you to the 17th-century Dawley barn, now converted into a space to seat 120 for dinner. There are smaller rooms for 50 guests or under, and a charming Outdoor Pavilion licensed for up to 120. The main hotel is all roaring fires and wood panelling, making it feel elegant but cosy, with 50 rooms and suites so there’s room for a crowd. exclusive.co.uk

Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa Cheshire

Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa, Cheshire

Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa in Nantwich may be 200 years old, but its spa in the old stable block is state of the art. The hotel has a number of suites to host a ceremony and wedding breakfast for up to 160 (with 250 for the evening) or you can hold an outdoor ceremony for 140 in The Garden Pavilion. handpickedhotels.co.uk
